Not long ago, when swine flu was spreading across the world at lightening speed, all the media was quite passionately involved in informing the general public on the Do’s and Don’ts. One of such warnings included and was made closely related to plane travel. Plane is a closed air conditioned compartment and obviously, due to internal air circulation, disease like swine flu or even a normal cold can spread like anything. Now, there has not been many scientific evidences proving this but its always better to take enough precautions when it comes to health. However, scientifically speaking, this stands more close to true than false. But not many people know the fact, that this is something which is avoidable to a larger extent when it comes to plane travel and hence can be proved false as well. Do you know how?
All the modern technological advanced aircraft are designed in such a way that they can bring in air from outside even at high altitude. Air which is 40-60 degree C below zero, is then heated by the aircraft’s internal system and then circulated into the cabin pushing the old air. Now, the hard fact is that this all leads to higher fuel consumption which in turn leads to higher cost. So to keep their operational costs as much low as possible, these airlines simply recirculate the air which is present in the cabin and bringing in a very less amount of fresh air from outside. In this era of “low cost airlines” or so called “economy airlines” when airfare are getting increasingly competitive and in certain circumstances are even less than that of train travel, this is bound to happen. Its always better if you take a good precaution yourself rather than relying a bit too much on airlines to do that for you.
